A Day at the Racing with Laura Toogood !

Even though I am having a supreme time here in NYC, I am totally out of the loop with most things Irish and Fab. This would present a Major problem if it wasn't for some wonderful, not to mention super glam gals whom I can live vicariously through! Today the smart, talented and lovely Miss Laura Toogood is having us along for a day at the races! Enjoy xoxo!

Goffs Millions Race Day On Sunday I attended the Goffs Millions Race Day and I was lucky enough to be a guest in the Brown Thomas marquee. I left Dublin at noon with some friends in a taxi destined for the Curragh. The day is a highlight in the Irish racing calendar as it plays host to Europe’s richest two year old races. The prize for the Most Stylish Lady is also lucrative, with Brown Thomas offering €20,000 to the winner.

We arrived at the Curragh to a friendly greeting from Kennedy PR, who were organising the hospitality on behalf of Brown Thomas. A champagne reception followed by a buffet lunch was offered prior to the first race. Several familiar faces attended the event including Ronan and Yvonne Keating, the former standing out from the crowd in black, square-framed vintage sunglasses. Amanda Byram wore a stunning couture dress with striking shoulder pads and joined publisher Michael O’Doherty on judging duty along with Stacey O’Donnell of Brown Thomas. Alan Hughes attended as did fellow TV3 presenter, Lisa Cannon who was on reporting duty for Xpose. Lisa dressed for the occasion donning a glamorous beige and brown headpiece to match her dress.

After lunch, we positioned ourselves by the windows at the front of the marquee and watched as a steady flow of ladies arrived, many strutting past the parade ring in an attempt to catch the eye of the judges. There were several stunning outfits on display with some contenders opting for a high impact factor by choosing attention-grabbing ensembles, and others attempting to achieve a more subtle effect through various eye-catching styles. Purple was the colour of the day, with the regal shade boldly on show, often teamed with cream or yellow, and on some occasions worn without any interference. Tall fascinators also proved popular and the coordinated brolly protocol was followed regularly. Many of those vying for the honours of Most Stylish Lady clearly spent considerable time synchronising their outfits in impeccable detail and inspiration had been taken from various fashion decades. The top thirty ladies were invited to join us in the Brown Thomas marquee. Peacock inspired attire had obviously proved successful with the judges as two of the shortlisted ladies opted for this theme. Contenders who had taken inspiration from specific fashion eras were also dutifully rewarded with a place on the shortlist; one eye-catching outfit was a red reflection on fashion in the 1920’s. It was Elaine Bennett’s simple, but striking black and cream dress, with matching black accessories that triumphed in the fashion stakes and secured the generous prize fund.

The race day was thoroughly enjoyable from both a fashion and equestrian perspective and for those who have never attended I would recommend it as a fun day out that can be enjoyed with a partner, family or friends. Many ladies spent a large sum of money on their outfits, but those who are on a budget are certainly not excluded from the fashion fun. An accompanying friend purchased one new item for the day; a stylish hat, costing less that five euro from a local charity shop. My personal choice was a Guess dress that I purchased over a year ago and which hasn’t had an outing for as long. It had black and white detail so I teamed it with a black cardigan adding a belt to create definition. It is crucial to keep the weather in mind when dressing for the racing and considering it is nearly October I wanted to make sure I was warm enough to spend some time outside, so I wore black tights with Kurt Geiger closed-toe heels.
Often people consider the hardest part of putting an outfit together for racing, is choosing what to wear on your head. There is a misconception that hats and fascinators are expensive; they might well be pricey to buy, but hiring them for the occasion proves an affordable option. I sourced a suitable black and white hat from Foxrock Fillies, which is a hat hire shop ironically located in Blackrock. I picked up my chosen hat three days prior to the race meet and was given six days ‘borrowing time’. Foxrock Fillies have a vast array of hats in all shapes, colours and sizes, and also offer some stunning fascinators and accessories, so it is definitely worth popping in for a browse. With my equestrian background I appreciate the action on the day so I had a small flutter and backed four horses in the early races, but sadly my luck was not in. For those who think they don’t have enough knowledge to become involved in the betting, a summary of the form is offered on the race card, so after a quick read, it is worth chancing an educated guess. The parade ring offers race goers an opportunity to admire the runners and for those who want to get close to the action it is easy to stand near the rails. If you have never been racing before it is definitely worth considering attending some of the major meets. Further information, including details regarding various Ladies Days, is available on www.goracing.ie. Special thanks to the friends I attended with for a fabulous day, and to Brown Thomas for their wonderful hospitality. For more covereage of the Fab Happenings check out The Independent!

Spotlight on Fionnuala Bourke Part Deux

We're back with Fionnuala Bouke and part two of our chit chat with the dynamic, multi layered and talented fashion designer poised to take Ireland by storm. Many may recognize Fionnuala from her Project Catwalk days, or the name from dressing many Irish models and 208 Miss Universe Ireland 2008 Lynn Kelly.
Today we will hear about Fionnuala's personal style, wardrobe staples and the CeLaGs she'd most like to see wrapped in her creations!
What current Celebrity do you think has great style?
Well this is a typical answer of the moment but I would have to say Cheryl Cole. What a transformation from a few years ago! She is now a Nations Sweetheart! Her style is spot on trend for the moment but, for me personally she can be a bit hit and miss. I wouldn't love everything she wears and I understand she spends a lot of money on her look, but I think her personality radiates through..Lets face it, she could rock a black bag!
Who would you most love to see in your creations?
Well, I'd love to see Cheryl Cole in my clothes! That might happen one day, I'll have to get on that! Other then that, I'm a big fan of flying the Irish Flag. I've worked with Sharon Conden and Ruth O'Neill, and I hope to work with them again in the future. Who knows, maybe Laura Whitmore? Blaithnaid ni Choifigh? Shana Keane? The Xpose Girls? I'll just keep going until I dress all the women of Ireland!
How would you define your personal style?
My own style is quite casual cool. I live in jeans and t-shirts and my gold chain necklace, that's a staple! I'm normally very busy running from my day job as a visual merchandiser in a major high street retailer to my studio(which is not as fancy as it sounds - It's my brothers spare room in his house!) so it is a must that I'm wearing something comfy, converse runners, and I live in my boyfriend blazer.
What essentials should every woman own?
I definitely believe in a good bra. A good bra could change your whole shape! And good underwear, Trinny and Susannah were so right there. I think a staple pair of black sexy high heels,a pair of jeans that you feel amazing in, and confidence, then you're good to go!
You're best styling tip?
Dress to suit your shape and not the current trend! I'm short myself and I'm bigger on the top then on the bottom. I've learnt through trial and error that there is a lot I cannot wear. You have to be able to say to yourself; "No. I cant wear leggings and a short top, that just doesn't flatter my figure." There are a lot of sheep out there....
Well a sheep she is not! Fionnuala is a true Irish original! Check out her latest looks and collections at http://www.fionnualabourke.com/ - we know you will be impressed!

Really Ireland? Really?

SO just as U2 is rocking New York and reminding America, and the world, that the Irish totally kick-ass, this viral Tom OC video is everywhere? I am still myself not clear on the origins of "Ireland's Hottest Gangsta Rapper" But one thing is for certain - the Americans think it is serious and are having a serious laugh at Ireland's expense? Don't believe me, read an entry from my FAV bitchy New York blogger Michael K at www.dlisted.com and see for yourself! - Tom even got named Hot Slut of the day! SO did Tom make this video? Is here from Swords? Was it serious, a mess or really mean prank? IF anyone has any insight, let me know!

Rode Hard and Put Away Wet

I know he is supposed to look like an older version of Henry, and considering - he looks pretty good, but we are definetly ready to see JRM back in top form and shape! What about you?
Jonny is back hard at work on the Tudors with his next, and final wife Joley Richardson...should be interesting!

Happy Birthday Artie!

You've never looked better!

Spotlight On : Fionnuala Bourke

Fionnuala Bourke is a fresh, young, up and coming Irish designer who's looks we just adore and who's brain we were dying to pick! We've talked to models and stylists about the business and their love of fashion so we just couldn't wait to have a creator of clothes answer some of the same questions and more! What inspired your first collection?
My grandparents were "The Bourkes" of Dame Street, a family run costume shop. I based my first real collection, which was my degree collection, on them. My grandfather was playwright and costumier Seamus DeBurca, and made costumes for some amazing films like "Captain Lightfoot" and "Shake Hands with the Devil".
The shop has since closed but I was lucky enough to get old photo albums, pattern drafting books, illustration books as well as a few costumes. It was amazing to work with family heirlooms and create a contemporary collection, taking ideas from the old books and using things I love like sporty zips, buckles and buttons along with bright colours. I feel such a strong connection with my heritage, I still draw a lot of inspiration from my grandparents.
What is the most difficult aspect of the design business? What surprised you the most?
For me, the criticism is the hardest thing to deal with - and it never gets easier! When I was on Project Catwalk I think that must have been the toughest few weeks of my life, emotionally. You feel constantly on edge; Will the judges like this? Will they think it is awful? You have constant doubts about your own ability. When we would be working on a project and Ben De Lisi would come over to critique it, my stomach would turn when you see there is no smile on his face and you think "Oh shit." When I finished the show I didn't go near my sewing machine for two weeks but, eventually you get back in the saddle. That aspect of it never goes it away. I've done a lot of work with Miss Universe Ireland contestants and other Irish models and I constantly find myself battling with my own self doubts. But I think that is only natural as a designer, if you thought you were great all the time the big achievements wouldn't seem so big. Set backs are only there to make you stronger.
What is the best piece advice you have been given while you are starting up your business?
Contracts, contracts, contracts! It is fairly basic advice but I have had to learn it the hard way. I've been bitten in the ass quite often lately, but you live and you learn - I won't be bitten again!
What is your favourite piece that you have designed thus far?
My favourite piece so far would have to be the gown and bikini I did for Lynn Kelly when she won Miss Universe Ireland in 2008. She and I worked together to create the look and it was just amazing to see her win on national television! To think, my creations were seen by thousands and thousands or people, it is just a pity the announcer called me Fiona Byrne!
Which designers inspire you?
I love, love, love Marc Jacobs! To me, his work is timeless. After looking at some of the work from London Fashion Week this year, Matthew Williamson and Louise Goldin really stood out. If those two are anything to go by, next summer is going to be fresh, with a cool colour palette of blues, pale yellows and creams, with loads of embellishments and interesting shapes.
What is You r FAV fashion Era?
I love the style and shape of the clothing from the 30s and 40s. I love looking through old books and photo albums and seeing what was worn back then. It is definitely a time that still inspires me and a lot of the shapes and ideas are things you see on the high street time and time again.
Who is your Fashion Icon?
My style icon would have to be Tina Turner. I just love her. Even though I may not wear her style of clothing, I think it is still amazing that at her age she is still going strong, still looks amazing, still totally rocks a show. Style to me is not just about your clothes, it is about an all over look, how you carry yourself as a person. Tina is the epitome of an independent, strong woman and I hop at her age I am still sewing and making clothes that people love to wear!
**Check back in tomorrow to see what F has to say about her personal style, fashion tips everyone can use and the celebs she would love to dress along with our rapid fire questions!**

Seen Out - 12.9.09

Another grey day in NYC, filled with meetings and phone calls and slightly on the boring side BUT - having dinner at Pranna later with an old BFF and very exciting! A little birdy (with a laptop and email capabilities!:) had this to say about the GLAM weekend I missed in Dublin and the Bollinger Champagne Reception; "The VIP guests were treated canapes and Bollinger that was served throughout the afternoon at the Curragh racecourse. We were transported from the Shelbourne hotel in town to the racecourse. Guests included: Miriam O'Callaghan's eldest daughter Alannah who wore a stylish brown headpiece with a matching short dress. Model Laura Toogood wore a red and black top hat decorated with black lace with a bright red dress. TV presenter Baz Ashmawy was there with his girlfriend, Tanja Evans, who wore a figure hugging purple skirt with a sheer black top and fuchsia shoes. Hayley Rock wore a lovely feather headpiece that was designed by Ronnie Ryan. It was a boiling hot day but everyone had a lovely time!" Sounds FAB! Keep in touch kittens! xoxo

NY Diary

So, even though when I first arrived in NY last week it was grey dull and rainy the last two days have been absolutely cracking! Sunny, dry warm and no dreaded humidity which was the big (hair) problem during my summer trip! I am in and out of meetings to set up the event that I have been asked to host in November for an Irish street wear line (*more info to come soon!) Saturday was typical NYC day for me when I am here on a visit - shopping, lunch, shopping, dinner and then out with friends! Sunday, however, I decided to soak up the sun and spend the day doing things I've always talked about but never gotten around to doing. After waking in my GORGE suite at Fitzpatrick's Gran Central and having a big yummy breakfast, I headed downtown to the Irish Hunger Memorial - which I had been dying to see ever since Hillary Swank brought Harry Connick Jr. for Corned Beef sandwiches in P.S. I Love You! The site is beautiful, amazing and very moving. The Irish Hunger Memorial (which takes its name from the Irish term for the famine of 1845-52, "An Gorta Mor," The Great Hunger) stands on a half-acre site at the corner of Vesey Street and North End Avenue in Battery Park City, between the Embassay Suites Hotel and the Hudson River. The 96' x 170' Memorial, which contains stones from each of Ireland's 32 counties, is elevated on a limestone plinth. Along the base are bands of texts separated by layers of imported Kilkenny limestone. The limestone is more than 300 million years old and contains fossils from the ancient Irish seabed. It is quite surreal to stand in a lush green field surrounded by the remnants of centuries old Irish cottage and have sky scrappers all around you! After that it was another stop at my hotel before I headed up, waaaay up, town to another Irish happening - the NY GAA Final - if my encounter earlier in the day wasn't surreal enough, watching a game of Gaelic with the F Train in the background certainly was! After having a few pints with the winning team - what? I my love all things GLAM and FAB but I'm an Irish girl still and I can't say no to a good session! - I headed back to the hotel for some American Telly and an Irish Cup of Tea! I have a big week ahead of me and always need my beauty sleep! Hope everything is well back across the pond kittens and please, keep me abreast on all the FaB happenings! xxox

Why We Love Irish Lads- Reason #4

How adorably their skin freckles in the sun....

........so long summer.

Fall Fashion 09 - Shop Local; Dresses!

The last few weeks of Summer become the perfect opportunity for designers and fashion houses to dress the biggest Hollywood stars in whatever look they are hoping to push for fall. The red carpet doubles as a a Fall Runway and all the 'It' girls don what we mere mortals will spend the Autumn /Winter trying to recreate!
The close of this Summer has seen one very particular trend flooding ever press call, premiere and showbiz fete; The long sleeve Mini Dress with Statement Shoulders!
Kristen Bell -House of LavandeRachel McAdams - Emilio Pucci Molly Sims - 3.1 Philip Lim Michelle Monaghan - Rachel Roy

Camilla Bell - Chloe

Normally, girls (me) see these pictures in the various glossies and immediately hit the world wide web trying to find a dress similar. But is that really necessary? As the recession trudges on, I can't help to think how important it is to shop local and support small and independent Irish business! We have amazing boutiques here throughout Dublin and around the country, all carrying the hottest trends for fall! So, Think Globally but, Shop Locally!

Looking for this dress trend in particular? head to Fran&Jane! With a location in Cork and shops throughout Dublin, Fran&Jane and their line Regine is one of the longest running fashion labels within Ireland, having been founded in 1974 by Fran Nolan. Fran's daughter Laura now heads up the design team and was nice enough to forward me on some new looks that are coming into the shops now and totally capture this big fall trend!

So ladies, it is up to us to bail Ireland out! Let's start our own Economic Stimulus Plan and shop 'til We Drop! Remember; Think Global, Shop Local!

*check out the Regine website or the Fran&Jane fan page on Facebook for locations, store hours and a peak at the collections!

White Hot Night in the Capital

Entertainment.ie has a FAB gallery of all the comings and goings last night when Residence held the Samsung Pearl White Mobile Launch.
Danielle Bux, or I suppose we should say Lineker now!, was on hand to help Samsung and other FAB people launch the latest Blackberry in the Pearl collection.
The recession seemed outa sigh and outa mind last night as the event was quite reminiscent of days of yore (or should I say more!) With a white theme and busting goodie-bags that even included the new coveted phone, Dublin's 'It' girls were out in force and - we think - gave the gorgeous lingerie model a run for her money!
Models Sarah Kavanagh, Ruth O'Neil, Louise Kavanagh, Laura Toogood, Charlotte McCabe and Naomi Cullen all looked gorge in their gleaming white!
The party was filled with TV3's best and brightest as Glenda Gilson, Aisling O'Loughlin, Lisa Cannon, and newbie Sean Munsanje were all their rubbing elbows and get all the latest goss we're sure!
Check out the Herald to hear Mrs Lineker's thoughts of our city and her new found married life!

Vintage Glam; Kitty Kiernan

Not many pictures remain of the 'Fab' Kitty Kiernan but between the few that do always show her looking highly fashionable for her time...add that to the fact that she was engaged to Michael Collins and that there are bars named for her all over the world (Wexford, Dublin, New York, Austria and Australia to name just a few!) Leads me to believe she was quite the gal... I just recently re-watched Michael Collins starring Liam Neeson and Julia Roberts as Ms. Kiernan and although Julia's performance and accent were brutal her wardrobe for the part was quite fab! Check out this screen capture: I DIE! Deep v-neck crepe blouse, high waisted pencil skirt in a navy/cobalt blue and a messy updo...Hello! I would wear that tomorrow! In fact, I just might....

The Fast and the Generous

If Voltaire Diamonds signs on to sponsor an event the probability is very high that it is going to be an all out glam shindig! Couple that with the fact that it is for an extraordinary cause and the fabulousness of thelaunch party, and it is pretty much a done deal that Ireland's First Annual Cannon Ball Run is going to be 3 days worth taking part in!
Kicking off at 7 am this Friday morning, the run , in aide of Barrestown Children's Charity, promises to be three days of fun, flash cars and beautiful Irish countryside...oh and did I mention, they are raffling off a Ferrarri 360 Spider, compliments of Richford Motor Company??
The 'Runners' will travel from Dublin, Kinsale, Killarney, Killaloe, Galway and back again, raising money, having laugh and doing really good thing, as each car entry fee (of €500) goes directly to Barrestown.
For those not familiar with Barrestown, it is a children's charity and camp set up by the late Paul Newman;
'Barretstown is a specially designed camp, providing a programme of adventure, activities and fun - backed by the medical world - which helps children with serious illness regain their confidence and self-esteem.' Check out their good works for yourself, and if you can't take part this weekend, donate!
Another equally swank sponsor, Residence, held the kick off party a few weeks back and let me tell you, it was a killer party - just check out some pics below! So, do what you can, and if any of you "runners" are out there, let me know! I'd love to post all about the trip and if you have any snaps pass them on!
